Unit 04: Publish!          Projects 13 14/04/2020 - 11/06/2020

What have I learned from reading Grid Systems in Graphic Design: Construction of the Type Area, p.49–56 and Construction of the Grid, p.57–70 Josef Müller-Brockmann.

Through reading these two excerpts I learned a lot about the process that goes into designing a page, from creating the grid system to adding the text all is great consideration to create a harmonious page that the reader will want to look at. Even though the texts are quite outdated, it was interesting to see the differences on the process now and how it was in 1996.

I found interesting the process that goes before even starting to create a page. The thought process has to go through columns, illustrations, typeface, the quality of the paper and more until you actually start to design the page. When nowadays we don't really do that, because it became so easy to change and create a page in indesign that there is no need to be so precise.

Furthermore, the different type area designs interested me. The process of choosing them depending on the typeface used and the print format and if chosen correctly they give the page a harmonious feel that is pleasant to read. Nowadays, graphic design developed so much that book designers have a lot more freedom on how they construct their books.

Overall, these excerpts taught me a lot about page design when the book was written and it also made me realise and analyse all of the different things that changed until now.

My designs

Double spread sheet with grid system.

Just the grid system

Double spread sheet design.

Details of my grid

  • 130 x 198 mm
  • leading 11/ type for the body 11 / type for heading 12
  • 45 lines inside margin
  • 45/5=9
  • 5 rows x 9 baselines each or 9 rows x 5 baselines each ( I chose the latter )
  • 9 rows x 5 columns

Note

After a lot of failed attempts at this task I realised that I just wasn't understanding the LindedIn Learning tutorials. Therefore, I decided to take a different approach and looked for a video on Youtube explaining the task of making the grid in a different way. That was when I found this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeRoe6zwdfI&t=613s , following it, I was finally able to complete the task.

28th April 2020 Feedback

  • margins look too narrow;
  • good different method;
  • leading is maybe too tight (try 13pt maybe);
  • the leading should be bigger that type even though it doesn't look too bad;
  • no need for indent in after the headings;
  • some editorial errors;
  • think about hierarchy;
  • good alignment of the grid;
  • line length feels comfortable;
  • the slight touch up between body size type and headings size type is nice;
  • overall good with some errors.
