Brief notes
- choose 1 article on wikipedia from a subject you are interested in;
- create a book from it;
- 16 pages including covers (14 pages inside + 2 cover pages);
- mainly typographic task but imagery can be included;
- if illustrations are included you should do them yourself;
- can be printed but it is not going to be handed in (can print and do a video flipping through the pages);
- if you want to print look at what is available to you right now; consider size;
- the size of the publication os set by you;
- Deadline 15th June 2020.

Typeface
The first Typeface I though immediately when thinking about this theme was the Rennie Mackintosh font (first image below) used in various shows in Hollywood. The show that this typeface was and is used in that connects to my theme is "American Horror Story". The typeface in itself has a very magical connotation - maybe because of the show - and that is one of the elements I am trying to portray in this publication.
In the website myfonts.com if you type "tarot" on the search-bar the first typeface that pops up is a typeface actually called Tarot by Great Lakes Lettering (second image below). I thought this typeface was perfect for this publication, not just because the name connects. Also, because the visual of the font is very magical and that not only connects with the matter, but also it is the feel I want to portray in my final publication.
My Plan
Theme: Tarot
- book could be the size of a tarot card (7 cm x 12 cm);
- concertina fold ( I don't think so, because I would like to print it and this method is not possible with the resources I have at the moment);
- Japanese binding or saddle stitched;
- put the publication in a box (deck box or cardboard box)
- include my own card illustrations within the publication.
Tarot standard size too small; found little notebook at home that is the perfect size I envisioned for this publication. It is only a tad bigger than the standard size for a tarot card. The dimensions of this publication are going to be: 13.5cm x 8cm.
Cover initial ideas
Inspired on the visual illustrations from the YWFT Illuminati typeface, I created some ideas for my covers. In the making of these illustrations I tried to portray a more minimalist style illustrations.
The illustration for the front cover, created by me, of the fool card that signifies beginning is the cover of my publication.
For the back cover the illustration I created for it is of the world card that signifies the end of a cycle.
I created three different but similar choices with the same illustration.
Tutor feedback 19th May 2020
- tarot size book cool idea
- share more history
- modern illustration - classic illustration (think about both)
- treat the page as a card
- consider more ideas
- think about the function of the book - a reading; instruction, select random pages will tell you something; possibilities of a tarot reading within the book
- typefaces think more about them; what type is used in actual cards
- the tarot font I have could have a different meaning
- think about a hand-drawn type
- Sophy Hollington
- spend more time thinking of type
- think about how has tarot been portrayed in films
- need more of my personality and my perspective in it
- weird walk
Illustrations:
- the reimagining it in a modern contemporary way is a good idea
- think about colour
- screenprinting - layer print in InDesign to show that up
- develop these forms
- coloured shapes instead of outlines
- Otl Aicher
- Otto Neurth
- Risograph printing
- Ask dad to draw a card and add that personality into it
HAVE FUN WITH IT!
