Whole Earth catalogue

A commission from the las '60s. Counter-culture magazine, thinking about encyclopedias, almost like a zine text and image. Mail order aesthetic reimagined to a manual.

Automatic Tarot by Sophy Hollington and David Keenan

Linoprint set of tarot cards. Shows a very personal feel. The type used is very unique.

Otl Aicher Illustrations

A modernist designer created a pictogram identity for his small hometown in Germany. Very personal. Shows the town through his eyes.

Otto Neurath Pictograms

Design of a new form of scientific expression through a photographic design system created by him.

Development Plan

  • Create a document on InDesign
  • Create margins and guides
  • Display and divide the text.

Developing plan based on the tutor feedback:

  • look at the references given in the tutorial
  • work on the illustrations ( colour; more personality)
  • explore more typefaces (hand-drawn or more)

Development of Illustrations

In order to mimic de screen printing layer colours, I converted the outline into colour forms. This process could also mimic the risograph printing method.

I created 3 sets for front and back covers. These contain only one colour in different opacities layered. A simple contemporary design. The colours I choose are yellow, red and pink, all very vibrant colours that I would not connect to tarot but it gives a random contemporary feel to the publication.

Making my own Typeface (for covers and headings only)

After the tutor feedback session I was suggested to create my own typeface just for covers and headings. After some more research one more typefaces for this project through What typefaces were normally used in the cards, I found that most decks use really basic serif typefaces like Minion Pro or Bodoni Antiqua SC, and that is what I will be using for the inside or main text of my publication. However, while searching for modern tarot decks I found the typefaces Bignet JF Font and Victor Moscoso Font, both great inspirations for creating my own.

After adding the typeface I created, into the design I decided that I didn't like it, as it looked not professional and too childish. However, while looking through my font gallery I found a typeface I got a while ago and never used it before. Shuriken Boy by designer Joachim Müller-Lancé and published by Adobe.

Seen alone, many of its characters don’t look like letters at all, only their combination indicates text. It’s a futuristic look often seen in Japanese Manga comics and high-tech graphics. In fact, the name Shuriken Boy was inspired by William Gibson’s sci-fi novel, Neuromancer, in which a star-shaped Ninja weapon - a shuriken - appears as the hero’s talisman. The dynamic, triangular characters of Shuriken Boy are certain to add dramatic flair to high-tech tools or product packaging, toys and games, book titles, clothing labels, and computer user-group logos. And that is why I used it in my publication.

New Designs with Text

New plan #2

After starting to create the document I realized that I had too much information for the 14 pages, I decided to cut some parts out and add a little section with my own experience on the matter as suggested on my tutorial.

The new plan is to include:

  • Introduction
  • History
  • Tarot card reading
  • Personal use
  • Criticism

Final Layout First Draft (without covers)

Final Layout First Draft (with covers)

New plan #3

After creating the first final document I realized that I could do a whole document in just the card reading aspect. And as discussed in the tutorial, I started to think that I could add a purpose to the book. Not just presenting an information book but giving it another purpose.

The new plan is to include:

  • History of the tarot card reading
  • How to Tarot
  • Meaning of the cards

+In this design some of the pages (7 of 16) are double the size to be able to fold out of the book. And the two covers are equal.+

Publication:

  • border is too close to the type, looks too crammed;
  • type is too big on the page (set to 9pt or 8pt);
  • headline typeface looks really good;
  • velvetyne.fr good website for free typefaces;
  • use a different typeface for the main body, the one used is too generic;
  • add more imagery (found images or illustrations);
  • develop a colour palette.
