Unit 04: Publish!          Projects 13 14/04/2020 - 11/06/2020

Note

I ended up creating one more version of my publication, where it has the same exact information that publication 2 has, but in this one, all pages, except the covers, have pull-outs so it has given me more space for more scans of my favourite deck as examples of the cards that are explained in the pages.

Notes

  • all publications use the same grid system, except the double pull out pages that have an extra column;
  • all publications use the same type, millimetre for the main body and shuriken boy for headings, in size 8pt for main body, 17pt for headings, and 35pt for the covers;
  • the illustrations on all publications are equal except the colour palette is different;
  • the chunk of the main text is different only on the first publication;
  • the page count is the same design on both publications, except for the pull out pages that have double numbers to be able to check on both the inside part and the pull-out part;
  • Besides the illustrations, I also felt that the card the inspired each colour palette should be present in the book so I added to each publication a scan of each card;
  • On publication 3 there are more scans of cards.

Publication 1 (plan #2)

Visual plan for better understanding

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • It contains only information from the Wikipedia page;
  • All pages are the same size so it is better for printing;
  • Encyclopedia like;

Cons:

  • A lot of text and little imagery;
  • No more functionality besides showing the information (doesn't have the teaching factor the other one have);

Publication 2 (plan #3)

Visual plan for better understanding

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • It has my own experience;
  • It has a lot more meaning and functionality;
  • More creative and interactive (pull out pages);

Cons:

  • Not a lot of visual examples;
  • It contains little information from the Wikipedia page (more in-depth from external sources to Wikipedia);

Publication 3 (plan #3)

Visual plan for better understanding

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Very interactive (pull out pages);
  • Very functional;
  • A lot of visual examples and imagery;
  • Has my own experience;
  • Most complete;

Cons:

  • Too different;
  • Only a small part comes from the Wikipedia page;

4 of June 2020 Tutor feedback

  • very playful design;
  • great idea to show my character in the publication;
  • overall, good publication;
  • typesetting is good;
  • illustrations are good.

Suggestions:

  • try put all images in the pull-out part of the page;
  • make the images bigger; it is better for interpretation;
  • captions of the images in the back page;
  • this case almost doesn't need page numbers; take them off or maybe only add them in the inside pages;
  • take away pattern illustration; simple is best;
  • front cover doesn't feel like one - too white; add a background colour;
  • indents look too big; the indent should be the same as the leading;
  • workspace too big and don't hyphenate the headings.

The chosen design is publication number 3.
